The Panchanga is the traditional astrological almanac of India. The word means “five branches”, for the Panchanga chronicles five different factors: the tithis or lunar days, the varas or days of the week, the nakshatras or lunar constellations, the yogas or relative distance between the Sun and Moon, and the karanas or half-days (i.e. half of a tithi). The Panchanga includes a great deal of ancient material dating back to the beginnings of Jyotish and is still of vital importance in muhurtha or electional astrology
